The uprights flex as you attach or detach the backrest. I assumed the style and design was for children's earrings. I bought it for my daughter who just turned 7. One column bent to tighten the back, the other bent to remove the back. She didn't wear them for 6 hours and complained that they hurt her ears. As I looked at her ears, the weight of the earrings pressed down on her earlobes. These are heavier earrings that you wouldn't think of. My daughter's ears haven't been pierced lately, so it's not because she's not used to having something in them. Ear piercing since 7 years. She wore all kinds of studs, pendants and even small hoop earrings. I wouldn't buy them again, they don't have to bend down, put on and take off at the back and they are heavy earrings. I am not satisfied with my purchase.
