You tighten the belt, but the release is behind the belt buckle, so you'll need something half the width of a butter knife to get behind the belt buckle when you're pressing against your skin to release the latch in order to to solve them. I end up just wringing out my pants and unbuttoning them after they're off. except for that good belt.
