Review on 💨 Noctua NH-L9a-AM4: Premium Low-Profile CPU Cooler for AMD AM4 (Brown) - Unmatched Cooling Performance for AM4 Processors by Lamar Vanderburg

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good enough for 3700x, still 5 stars

TLDR at the bottom. Got this to replace my Scythe Big Shuriken 3 with a NF-A12x15 in my Ghost S1 (without the hat) for my 3700x build (on a B450I Gaming Plus AC) due to turbulence noise. Cooling for this combo was great, not even reaching 70C with the default fan curve in most games. Temperatures are what I originally expected, about 15-20°C worse than the previous cooling solution I've used before, so I wasn't disappointed when I saw temperatures of 75-80 degrees in Destiny 2. To be honest I could leave it like that since 80 degrees is not a terrible temperature for this cooler + 3700x or for processors in general. Since I had extra fans I decided to put the NF-A12x15 (actually any fan would do) on top of a standard 92mm fan as this fan doesn't cover the entire radiator and the temperature dropped to an average of 66 degrees. There weren't really any mounting points I could use for an additional fan, but it was only held by the PSU cables. The additional fan also follows the same fan curve as the CPU fan. Old Scythe Big Shuriken 3 + NF-A12x15 15-20° better than L9a-L9a + NF-A12x15 over 92mm fan = approx. 5-8s worse

Pros
  • Good for many
Cons
  • I'm mad at
