The music box is for show, not for play.
It took us a long time to discover that you can't crank a music box like a traditional one, you have to detach the tail to crank it, you can't do it from the outside. Everything is not very solid. So you have to take the ponytail off and put it back on every time you play. It is more of a display case than a real music box.
