Chemical smell but expected based on reviews I read. I was hoping this was an exaggeration but it smells quite strongly of smoke. This mattress requires you to air out the chemical smell. It has a toxic new car smell x 10. Mine has been in the garage for a few days now to let the smell dissipate and the room still smells of chemicals. I'm sure the smell will dissipate, but we couldn't stand it in the house. I unpacked it last night and put it in the bedroom with a new box spring and a new set of duvets. The chemical smell was strong so we turned up the ceiling fan, opened the window, closed the door and put a towel next to the door. Mind you, it's 110 degrees in Arizona so opening the window isn't smart enough to keep the heat out, but we were desperate. We put it in the garage this afternoon to air it out. Fingers crossed it will get better in a few days. It's for our guest room, so we're in no hurry to use it. Good mattress even for heavy people. Very firm but should be fine with a heavy mattress topper if you like a softer one. I only tried it for a few minutes because of the smell, but for the cheap price it seems pretty good. I am happy with my purchase and it seems logical that when the factory makes and rolls up these items for shipping they prevent the chemical smell from evaporating. I hope the other reviewers are right and the smell gets better soon.
