Review on πŸ’» Monoprice IDE to Compact Flash CF Adapter with PCI Bracket [A2] by Joshua Wheeler

Ideal for replacing an old IDE hard drive on an old PC!

I bought this to replace an old slow hard drive in an old PC 486. It was easy to install and I copied everything from my existing hard drive and made it MS-DOS and FDISK bootable with no problems. For my project I used a 1GB compact flash card and found that the machine starts up much faster and is much more responsive. However, this is easy to fix if you know how to use a soldering iron. The board itself has an activity indicator that can be expanded and installed elsewhere. Alternatively, the LED can be removed and the pins installed in their place, which is what I chose. This allowed me to easily connect the original LED built into the PC case. I would recommend this adapter to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to replace rotating drives in old/retro machines. An added benefit is that the CF card can be easily removed without opening the PC, making it quick and easy to transfer files between old and new machines.

Pros
  • Quick replacement
Cons
  • Almost never
