Review on ๐Ÿšฃ Thule 854 Kayak Carrier Accessory Mat - Black, One Size: Water Slide Upgrade for Enhanced Performance by Luis Esquivel

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great mat for loading a kayak on the roof.

I bought this a few years ago to make loading and unloading my 10ft 6in Trophy 126 fishing kayak easier, especially when the kayak is wet. I have a 2004 Rodeo SUV with a roof rack that is about 5ft 6in off the ground. The empty kayak weighs 47 pounds and I usually go out by myself so I can't rely on anyone else to help me load and unload the kayak. This mat allows me to slide my kayak onto the crossbars of my roof rack without tearing the rear edge of my SUV's roof. How to load and unload my kayak; I spread a strip of old carpeting on the floor behind my SUV, then attach the mat by tying it to the rear bar of the roof rack and letting the mat hang over the edge of the roof and over the rear window. I carry my kayak to the SUV and place one end on the mat (which rests on the rear edge of the SUV roof) and the other end on the floor carpet. From now on all I have to do is grab the bottom end, lift it up and glue it to the roof rack. I strap on the kayak, take off the mat and rug, toss it in my SUV, and I'm ready to roll. (Note: most places I take my kayak I load and unload it on tarmac. The carpet keeps the ends of my kayak from snapping when it's on the ground.) After two years of fairly regular seasonal use the mat is still there like new and I have no scratches on the roof of my SUV from loading and unloading a kayak. As many times as I've used this mat, the velcro straps still grip and hold the mat properly in place. I believe this is a must have kayak accessory to carry on a car.

Pros
  • Roof Rack
Cons
  • Some trouble
