The first floor of our house has hardwood floors and most of the furniture has smooth metal or plastic legs to protect it from scratches. This is normal for a sofa or large table of significant weight, but smaller tables can easily be bumped and moved by dogs, grandchildren, or even a robot vacuum. These pads have a layer of high friction rubber molded with tiny indentations to conform to the ground (you can zoom in on the Revain website to see this). Next comes the felt layer, which compresses but doesn't move from side to side. It is covered with a high strength adhesive layer for attachment to the table leg. This construction means better contact with the wooden floorboards and therefore greater slip resistance. To cut them to size I used a model maker's scalpel blade, but I'm sure a sharp utility knife would work as well. I don't think scissors or scissors will work very well as the pillow will crush, but I haven't tried it. I can't say anything about the durability as I've only used it for three days, but I don't see any reason to expect any problems. Great product at a moderate price!
