Good alternative to stencil

I was a woodworker and I tried several times to paint my son's name on a small stool using stencils and paint. It sucks! I've used cheap and expensive stencils and a few different colors but they kept bleeding out. After repainting this stool three times, I finally ordered it. They are of good quality and fit my needs well. Much easier than stencils and look very similar. Also note that this set includes a large selection of letters for most names/spellings (several letter sets for the most commonly used letters).
