First off I should say that this is a long review, albeit a detailed one. If you like reading details, if you want something fast, this isn't for you. If you want to make coffee, Chemex or a fake will do. Honestly, this decanter is just a decanter. What sets it apart is its double-walled construction, which retains more heat than the traditional single-walled Chemex. I don't really subscribe to the entire 1 and 2 point measurement system as I have invested in scales and excel at accuracy so will continue to get my money's worth with my inflated scales and accurate water percentages. The disadvantage of all glass products is that they can easily be broken. I've done this with my Chemex in the past and I've done it with this one. The saving grace is that Fellow products replaced my carafe for free, which was very nice of them considering it was my fault. Unfortunately, if you're using glass, that's one of the problems with this median. Compared to Chemex, the heat retention alone is worth the weight of the sand. Aside from the carafe, this is a pretty good pour-over system. The XF and X drippers are flat rather than funnel-shaped. This allows your coffee to rise more evenly and the water is filtered more evenly through the ground coffee. I have personally compared Chemex and Stagg blends and every time the flavor of the Stagg system has won out. If, like me, you sign up for a coffee membership and pay $20-$30 for 12-16 ounces of coffee, you want to make sure you get your money's worth. Well, in addition to being more expensive than the Chemex (or at least the standard Chemex), I also have to report that the XF and X filters are expensive. The XF is $8 for 45 filters, which works out to $0.18 for 1-2 cups of coffee, depending on how much you're brewing at once. X filters you can get 2 packs of 90 for $10 which is about $0.11 per filter. I typically don't brew more than 525ml, which is about 2 cups of coffee. The decanter handles this volume perfectly. If that's more than what you earn on average, then the guy also has a double-walled tumbler that can be used as a small, single-serving carafe, and that works seamlessly with both XF and X drippers. Return to the Chemex However, I will not go to the system because, as I said, I personally find coffee tastier. At the end of the day, wherever I invest time and money, I want to do it as well as possible.
