There was no smell when opening the packages like some you buy in store. I bought three sets for my 6 month old daughter when she started crawling. We don't have a carpet, so I wanted her to play with a little pillow. Can also be used as a training mat for adults. Now, when my baby is 8 months old, she takes the squares apart, chews them and carries them around the house. None have cracked or broken yet. Hopefully as she gets older and she can really build and enjoy them they will last. You can't make a full cube out of these blocks, just the five sides align and fit together properly, but you can get creative with the floor play areas. In general a pleasant product.
