broad not very broad; too tight for my baby

After reading other comments on width, I took a size 5W instead of a size 5 to replace the size 4 Sorel boots for my nine year old. The Kamik 5W boot was still too tight on the sides so we're bringing it back. The picture shows a Sorel in size 4 on the left and a Kamik 5W on the right. Doesn't look far to my eye. Someone in these reviews suggested removing the liner if it's too tight, but that doesn't seem like a smart option for winter boots.
