I needed a docking station for my Macbook Pro. Most of the ones I've borrowed or bought from friends have all had trouble meeting my needs. This covers all the basics for me. - SD card slots for my camera and Raspberry Pi - Gigabit Ethernet with built-in bandwidth - enough USB ports for keyboard, mouse, storage, peripherals - multiple outputs to work with different monitors I have around my house. The Totu 12 in 1 has HDMI, DP and VGA ports which I can use to add just one extra monitor to my Macbook. He does that pretty well. I use the telepresence unit as my main monitor. The unit is extremely picky about the adapters it supports (keeps complaining that most adapters are out of range and I've only been able to get an Apple HDMI dongle to work so far). This one works great with it as seen in the photos, no problem. The resolution is sharp. It negotiates correctly and remains securely connected. This is the only 3rd party dongle I've found that does this. Very happy with it. The sound is also transmitted via HDMI. The next important aspect for me was the gigabit ethernet adapter. I work from home and am constantly downloading ISOs and OVAs for work. It achieves the expected maximum throughput I see in my router tests. I usually use Wi-Fi, but for downloads like this it's good to have a physical port. I connect DVDs and USB sticks to my computer for backup or imaging purposes. I ran a test writing a file to a USB drive and actually got a higher average write speed to the drive than the dongles I ordered from Apple with my Macbook. Advantages -4 USB ports (2 USB3.0, 2USB2.0), 3 video ports, audio output, Gigabit Ethernet, very compatible with monitors and projectors, very solid construction. It is an aluminum body with plastic end caps. The aluminum is thick enough not to flex at all. The color goes very well with the Macbook. The colors and resolution on my wife's monitor (Displayport) were phenomenal. It really heats up. After running it all day I haven't seen it heat up or have any issues, although the aluminum body seems to radiate it pretty well. I've only noticed this when lots of devices are plugged into it, which is to be expected. The fact that it's only moderately warm means it handles worst-case power consumption very well. Disadvantages There is nothing flashy in the supplied sleeve (microfiber). I didn't expect or need it so it's not a problem for me. It will protect it when I carry it in my backpack. Only if you have a Mac. The output is a regular display port, while Macs (of course) use a mini display port. I bought an adapter and it works like a champ. Update 2020 - one year later. The cable has a problem at the base of the device and no longer stays connected when you move it (add a USB device or reconnect the HDMI cable). This is normal and stable as long as you leave it alone. The product is not as durable as I had hoped. I only use it in my home office and don't take it to the street or anything like that.
