Old portable phone
The lack of power outlets in some places in my childhood home has meant that portable phones have to be used in addition to fixed power outlets. We learned the hard way that if the power goes out, you have nothing. If the phone tower collapses along with the cellphone, nothing will be left, if the cable falls, nothing will be left. This is the best and safest option for the elderly. A new battery is easily replaced in portable devices and they are like new.
