I have very fine hair so I have to be careful when choosing products. Today I treated myself to a perm with Zoto's Quantum Extra Body Acid Perm. So far so good... I'll keep coming back after a few weeks of washing and styling. I didn't want tight curls - just loose natural curls, so I went for all purple boning. I also bought end paper, a cotton swab and some long plastic scrapers to run through the roller bands. (I need curlers to prevent sagging and weird roller marks on my thinning crown. If you have normal or thick hair, this may not be a problem for you.) The instructions in the box were simple but easy to follow. (Although I've watched stylists curl my hair dozens of times over the years, I've also watched a few YouTube videos for advice from people who have already done it.) The first big key to one A good perm is getting it right picking up hair super clean. I used a clarifying shampoo and after shampooing I didn't put any conditioner or other products on my hair at all and then combed it with a good wide tooth comb to avoid breakage. good result, maybe accidentally used conditioner or something after shampooing? It's hard to say without asking, but that's something I've seen other people do. The next big key to a good perm is definitely how you curl your hair, so I put on my patience cap and really took my time. I also kept a small spray bottle of water on hand to dampen each section as needed. (Hair curls easier and absorbs the solution better when it's damp.) I let the curl solution + activator sit for a full 20 minutes before rinsing it out (curlers still in) and gently drying. I then applied the neutralizer and let it sit for 10 minutes before carefully removing the curlers and giving my hair a final rinse. I will wait at least 48 hours before rinsing them out, per the directions (and previous experience with salon perms). My first impression? It actually came out a little better than the perm my former stylist did for me. (See photo) Curls seem softer and my hair doesn't get fried. Now I suspect she used something too harsh on my hair. I'm so happy I finally found the courage to do my own perm at home. Getting a better score than theirs has given me a lot of confidence and it will save me tons of money for years to come.
