Review on ๐Ÿ’ก Furman Sound 8 Outlet Surge Protector by Marcus Braunstein

Revainrating 4 out of 5

PST 8D - a slight increase in performance, but the problem is the price compared to PST 8.

PST-8D has two isolated banks of 4 outputs each. Neither is digitally more efficient than analogue. The fact is that the number goes to one bank, and the analogue to another. The manufacturer recommends analog connections closer to the cable and digital connections at the other end. Was it worth spending the extra $30 for the 8D instead of the PST-8, which also has LIFT technology? In hindsight, neither the reviews nor the manufacturers mention any benefits of compartmentalization on this product. Considering HDMI in a surround receiver is out of the question, so I have to assume the receiver is hooked up on the analog side regardless of the HDMI digital transmission. The benefit of compartment separation is implied and amplified in other categories of audio equipment (e.g. preamps, amplifiers) so I give it the benefit of the doubt. eg: 4 stars. I wanted both an improvement in entry line conditioning with surge protection and a long lasting unit. The Furman brand is known for its quality design, which made the selection easy. I find improved separation and overall balance in my 7.1 audio. Video maybe a little on color saturation but not much if anything. There seems to be a slight loss of sharpness in the video with softer outlines than before. All in all a good investment, but maybe PST 8 would have been the same. I think the "D" for digital is a bit exaggerated and more expensive coverage of two banks instead of one. As for the surge protector, it's an excellent product with a solid reputation.

Pros
  • A lot of positive emotions
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for the elderly
