This device will NOT remember screen settings (brightness, contrast, color, etc.) unless powered by the included USB adapter. My Dell XPS13 has no problem powering the monitor through the USB-C port, even when running on battery power and without using the optional USB monitor adapter. But whenever the XPS13 monitor turns off due to inactivity, which also turns off the attached monitor when the laptop wakes up again, the monitor's brightness is always set to 30 by default (which is pretty dim). It does NOT save any settings unless the AC adapter is used. So forget about portability and an extra monitor that remembers what brightness you want after a power outage/sleep/hibernate.
