Enter the twentieth century with the introduction of boat epoxy and wah-la! Here is one of the few real examples of how to eat and eat your own cake. I've attached some photos to illustrate how the water just drips and lets the tree do its thing on its own. A bonus I have found from my experience is that the epoxy has run down the sides as gravity on the ground is always variable, hardening and sealing the bristles located on the perimeter helps prevent the usual fungal growth, that can be seen above the ground course time with regular wear.
