When connecting to a laptop: The refresh rate you get depends on your laptop. My results:

I've tested 4 of my laptops with this monitor and thought my experience might be helpful to others, especially regarding the refresh rate. I think the most interesting thing I've found is that my gaming laptop outputs 165Hz over HDMI, while everything you read before buying says 144Hz is the max. Read on if you want to see my experience testing different laptops: If you connect a monitor, go to Display Settings, Advanced Display Settings. Click View Adapter Properties, then click List All Modes. This will show you a list of output options and you can see here the maximum refresh rate you can get with your current connection. Also note that this indicates whether the video output is coming from your integrated graphics card or from a dedicated graphics card. Here is my experience testing various laptops: 3 year old Acer Aspire E 15: 120Hz via HDMI Available output options: HDMI Unfortunately the maximum refresh rate is 120Hz, I couldn't get 144Hz via HDMI. The video signal comes from the integrated Intel HD Graphics 520. This laptop also has an nvidia geforce 940mx graphics card, but for some reason it doesn't work as a discrete graphics card and therefore doesn't provide a video signal for output. via HDMI. A brand new HP Elitebook just got back from work: 165 over Thunderbolt USB-C, 120Hz over HDMI. overclocked to 120hz and couldn't get to 144hz. I think it's misleading when the product description says 144Hz over HDMI, but my new top-of-the-line HP Elitebook runs at a maximum of 120Hz. Luckily, it gave me 165Hz from a Thunderbolt USB-C port that I connected to a Thunderbolt USB-C to DisplayPort cable connected. Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop: 165Hz via HDMI, 165Hz via MiniDisplayPort Output options: HDMI, MiniDisplayPort I was surprised here because my gaming laptop could give me 165Hz via HDMI. Everything in the description of this product says that the maximum frequency for HDMI is 144Hz. I would like to note here that the "display adapter" for my HDMI output is a dedicated GeForce GTX 1660Ti graphics card, not the integrated graphics I've seen on my other two laptops. Also a note on using a "high speed" USB cable: there's a lot of talk on the internet about the need for a specific HDMI cable to get a higher refresh rate. I think this is misleading. The hardware you're outputting from is what really matters and that's all I'm trying to do in my review here. The stable 165Hz that I'm currently getting with this gaming laptop is achieved with a Nintendo Wii U branded HDMI cable. So a solid cable, but not for "high speed" or the like. However, I will say that I used a cheaper HDMI cable that I got from Revain recently and while I was getting 165Hz I started to "drop out" when using this cable. Like he couldn't handle the bandwidth and stuttered for a few seconds. So yes, your HDMI cable should be reasonably decent, but buying an expensive "high-speed" HDMI cable won't magically result in a high refresh rate if your laptop can't boost that refresh rate to begin with. And finally Macbook Air (2015): 120 Hz via MiniDisplayPort. Output Options: MiniDisplayPort. I used a MiniDisplayPort to Displayport cable to connect my wife's Macbook Air to this display. I tried setting up a second display and it hit 120Hz. So something along the lines of my two non-gaming laptops described above. But I was a bit surprised because 2 PCs were connected via HDMI at max 120Hz, I thought the MiniDisplayPort on Macbook Air could be a bit higher. I hope I was able to convey some useful information on how to use this display. on a laptop! Thank you for reading.
