To achieve consistent OFA grades of Excellent and Good on hip x-rays I have fed and recommended only Holistic Select Large and Giant Breed to large and giant breed puppies for the past four years, for the first year of life, followed by 23% protein chicken and rice. (Brands Kahoots or Nutri-Source have not checked Holistic Select to see if they have them). We also measure nutrition by only feeding by weight requirements. Details: Following this protocol, a preliminary x-ray of the hip at the age of 1 year leads our vet to say that our Golden Retriever's hips are always "good or great depending on what the OFA decides" but in his opinion perfect ". After 1 year we switch to an adult low-protein diet, resulting in final OFA tests at two years of age always scoring 'good' or 'excellent'. Our success is based on 4 Golden Retrievers raised from birth whose parents, grandparents and subsequent generations have also passed OFA in Hip, Heart, Elbows and Eyes. Our experience with the same genes is that extremely high-protein diets don't produce the same results, and that using other foods that we've tried doesn't result in the consistent "good/great" thighs that we want.
