Review on StarTech.com USB 3.0 Peripheral Sharing Switch - Connect up to 4 Computers - Mac/Windows/Linux Compatible - USB A/B Switch - High Speed USB Switch (HBS304A24A) by Timothy Schroeder

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Confusing, frustrating, and poorly documented

I asked a question about this product, which has since disappeared, regarding the 5V charging port that is on the USB peripheral side of the switch. It's a USB Micro-B connector, and that would be when you need power to power the peripheral, as opposed to bus power coming from the USB port (which might not be enough for the peripheral). StarTech mentions the port. in its limited documentation, but only states that the user will "connect a 5V power supply to the power supply connector (USB Micro-B). The less knowledgeable user will scratch their head as StarTech does not include a 5V power supply nor does it sell one as an accessory on their website. And the user is wondering how many mA or amps it takes. annoys. Well, the iMac worked right away, of course. I had to fiddle around with the PC a bit. I ended up having to plug the host's USB 3.0 connector into a USB 2.0 port on my PC (it wouldn't work on a 3.0 port), which negated the benefits of USB 3 speeds. Again disappointing. Strangely everything worked when connected to the iMac's USB 3 port. Of course again. Mixed result for a product that seemed so promising.
