Endeavored to properly convert from R12 to R134 later this winter (2020) working with a dealer foreman who identified the leaks. In April, my skills as a backyard mechanic finally got me to a cold air conditioner, but the mechanic warned there might be a small leak from the upgraded upper side port. In early June, an annoying "hiss” emanated from the air vents, and the street turned into a hot Arizona daytime chaos. After diagnosing the problem (due to too much fiddling with the high side valve and gauge manifold) I realized that the problem wasn't with the retrofit, it was the valve core!
