Great weeder
I use them as a weeding tool, especially for things like dollar grass, which has a wide variety of spaghetti-like roots. I simply dip the hook into the soil next to the weed and guide it slowly and carefully, holding on to the root (or underground stems in some cases) and then pulling it to the surface. I gently run the hook along the roots/underground stem to dig it up, which allows me to get all (or most) of the large clumps of weed. Very easy.
