Caused a kernel panic in Mac OS 10.15.7; Died after about an hour of use

I was very excited to use this 2TB flywheel SSD after I received it. I bought an NVMe enclosure for the drive and the build was quick and easy (I use other NVMe SSDs in the same enclosure, but the SSDs aren't Mushkins, they're WD). I bought this SSD for three reasons: 1. Price2. Endurance (TBW)3. Availability To be honest the #3 main reason for the purchase was as the regular SSD I bought was out of stock. Since it was a bit cheaper than my option, I decided to give it a try. Anyway, after reassembling, my Mac immediately saw the SSD and I was able to erase it gracefully. I started writing data to the disk to test it. This was a big mistake on my part as I made the mistake of running a "test" on a machine that was in the middle of a lengthy task/task. In short, a kernel panic occurred while writing. When the Mac restarted, the error report pointed to this SSD. Strangely, my Mac stopped recognizing the drive. I proceeded to verify that they were indeed "dead", two different Macs and in several cases that I know of are working. I can safely say that this is a problem with the drive and not the computer/chassis. I have requested a replacement in hopes the next SSD will be a success and will update this review. I hope it was just a fluke as it's a decent value. However, I see others have had similar issues with their drives dying or dying on arrival.

Pros
  • cool product
Cons
  • Something different
