Lays flat and my mouse works great on it. No additional mouse pad required. Also, there is no weird smell that I know sometimes comes with some synthetics. My clumsy ass spilled coffee on it once and I can tell you it doesn't stain and wears down like a champ! If you have a wooden table, that's great. Having an icy granite countertop will keep your hands from getting cold. It's really amazing and worth the price.
