I bought this to build a cat tower for my screened patio. The metal frame is easy to assemble with a rubber mallet and the frame is pretty solid and looks a lot better than what you'll find in a big department store.I cut out some Ikea wood slats I had on hand and used them for the bottom shelf.As opposed to the MDF shelves that come with the unit, the slatted frames can easily accommodate the heavy boxes of tiles I weighed the unit down with and keep those fat cat asses from tipping it over.MDF shelves, as I said, are junk - hardly 3/ 8" thick and warps easily. To build the landings on each tier, I cut each shelf in half and switched the shelf halves so the cats could climb up. The other halves I kept ten along with my plywood stash. After a few months I noticed that the patio shelves were getting moldy - no wonder with Florida's humidity. But when I pulled out the halves I had put away, they were also covered in mold. Pooh! I simply threw away the MDF that came with the shelves and cut new landing shelves out of plywood. in a petri dish.
