U joint plain and simple, light weight but built pretty well. I used a couple of these and some shafts for mechanical remote control of the fuel valves that were in my boat's engine room. If a fire were ever to break out in the engine room, it would be nearly impossible to get to the fuel valves to shut them off. I drilled a hole in the steel wall and welded in a 1/2" pipe, threaded the shaft through the pipe and articulated the direction of the shaft with U-joints, welded on the handle and it works great. Only problems. I had those The tiny hex head screws that are supposed to hold the shaft to the U-joint were a little unreliable and the wrench that came with them loosened with any torque applied so I welded the U-joint to the shaft.-Joints release with a snap ring (not lose!) and easy to put back together Another reviewer suggested drilling the shaft and using dowel pins, that would be a good approach too, the shafts I used were hardened so welding worked best for me. Overall for the price a good buy.McMaster had something similar for three times the price.
