I was also given plastic rim protectors but I still managed to scratch the rims. I noticed my rims were already scratched on the inside of the tire where it wasn't visible without removing the tire after replacing it at the dealer. My alloy wheels are pretty soft and obviously don't like contact with harder metals. Might be an issue with my technique but I might try finding spoons with a softer protective coating on the ends and see how they perform. I had no problem with steel wire rims, only alloy rims, but that's why I ended up buying tire buckets. Screwdrivers are suitable for steel rims. Just be careful with tires. The rounded ends of these spoons protect tires and tubes while still scratching soft alloy wheels. You definitely need protection for your drives, and you can still scratch them pretty easily.
