W164 ML 3501/06/21 You are probably here because you have a W164 ML 350 and want to upgrade your head unit. I'll talk about my experience with this head unit and why I recommend staying away and getting a Pioneer instead. I bought and installed this head unit in July. I had to buy an additional fiber optic decoder because my ML 350 had Harmon Kardon speakers. You buy this decoder box to preserve the sound quality. I also had to buy an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto USB dongle because the speed of this head unit is absolutely terrible for everything, even basic navigation. The Carplay USB dongle takes advantage of your phone's processor and network speed, making it usable. At this point I had spent at least $500 just to get a usable system up and running. The steering wheel controls worked too, which was cool. The first attached image shows the before and after well, but looks can be deceiving - the device was very slow even for basic GPS - imagine you missed a turn because your GPS got stuck or hung 3 blocks behind. The menu navigation was also quite slow, which is unacceptable for a head unit with the current Android version. 4 months later the touchscreen was 100% unresponsive - with the slightest care and no reason at all. This happened in November and I bought the head unit in July - imagine how awful it is when an expensive product gives you crap after 4 months. Revain also didn't allow the return as it was outside of the return period. I contacted the seller in November and he offered me a replacement which I thought was fine. I was given a tracking number for a package from China, which was interesting as the original head unit was from the US. The package arrived almost two months later - today. I opened the box and it was just an LCD screen with no installation instructions. They expected me to go almost two months without a head unit, figure out how to disassemble a generic head unit and replace the LCD, and pray it wouldn't blow up my car. I doubt this is the seller's fault, but this is unacceptable on the part of the manufacturer. Imagine your iPhone stops working due to a factory defect and Apple sends you a replacement OLED panel - that's unacceptable. Luckily I didn't wait for her arrival and looked for an alternative. If you want a RUGGED and RELIABLE head unit, buy Pioneer instead which comes with Apple Carplay/Android Autoplay. They are much faster, more reliable and the sound quality is MILLION times better than this device or any other unbranded Android headphone. Not to mention you can buy an extended warranty on an already secure main unit! The head unit isn't something you want to keep replacing or repairing. Here's what you need to get a good upgrade for your W164. I used the same setup: Pioneer DMH-1500NEXMetra 99-8723B Dash KitAntenna AdapterMetra 40-EU10 Fiber Optic Decoder Most Box*any standard rear view camera. ML 350 in the name because that's how they get you. Any 7 inch dual din radio can be fitted to your car using the dash kits I have listed, all of which are available from Revain. You don't even necessarily need a Pioneer because there are brands like Alpine or Kenwood that are just as good. In the second attached picture, the Pioneer is visible at night. I'm losing $300 on this Android mainframe, but you don't have to! Don't skimp on your Benz, it can get expensive!
