I will never know why they are so cheap compared to buying them individually. What I do know for sure is that my wife loved them, and instead of the overwhelming "favorite cup" pressure, we now have the luxury of having octuplets. Yes, I didn't think we would ever be so blessed :-). Panic no more, "we left a cup at the office, car, etc." You cannot grab another one without fear as you can rest assured that the lost one will be found within a day. My wife was even kind enough to give one of her 8 to a good friend. And even if there are only seven left, you can be sure that homeless animals will return to the herd. Bring calm and serenity back to your everyday life, buy 8 to soon become your favorite mugs. Well, and most importantly, it fits in any cup holder (and doesn't turn the cup holder into a small pool). The straw turned out to be a really unexpected surprise. It's heavy and strong and has a locking ring built into the straw about 1 inch from the bottom so you can't lose the straw no matter how hard you try. I also prefer clear plastic as it doesn't hide dirt or scum. Finally, these cups showed no tendency to stain. If you let the tea drink in a hot machine for a few days, a "growth ring" will not form in the cup.
