I, like many others, was hesitant about this lens or the 24mm-70mm f/2.8, both versions I and II. Cost was the most important factor , I also read about this version II of the 24-70 lens is expected to arrive shortly before the release of the updated version with image stabilization. The main features of this lens that I love are: The L-series quality offers great colors, sharpness, flower cap and body (typical of the L-series). This lens is the perfect complement to the 580 EX II's zoom range in E-TTL mode, as the flash approaches the same at either end of the range when the lens is zoomed in. The IS works great as far as it's loud, I don't really notice it compared to my Canon 100-400L. The weight is not a problem, the autofocus is quite fast. large magnification range. I think this should be the only kit lens available, especially for the 7D. There is no noticeable distortion in the corners of the crop sensor. Use the 12mm extension tube and you will get great results. I really like this lens for portrait photography, it's about as perfect as it gets. Great running lens, great fit and range. Now I have this lens on 7D all the time. The only downsides I can see are: The body of the lens protrudes from the body when zoomed to 105mm. IS only has on or off mode, there is no mode. 1 or Mode 2 No zoom lock, not that zoom creep is an issue at the moment if you look up or straight down, only time will tell if that's an issue. Definitely recommend this lens to all Canon users, it should definitely be the best. The first L-series lens was purchased to complement the camera body and maximize the camera's capabilities.
