Quality, looks and price make this set an excellent value.

. Definitely a purchase recommendation. I started playing chess a few years ago, mostly using Chessmaster computer textbooks, but only occasionally. Lately I've gotten more serious about chess and wanted a chess set to play with others and work on chess books. I wanted something with good quality and decent looks, but as I'm just starting to play more I couldn't justify spending much more than this set is worth. I have reviewed many sets but this one hit the nail on the head. Here's what I like about this set: -- QUALITY: The plastic used in this set is very high quality. You may have seen this type of plastic on sturdy storage containers or high-quality plastic tool boxes, for example. You'll know it when you see it: it has a twisted, fibrous appearance and is very, very stiff. The only thing I'm not sure about is the hinges; I can't say exactly how they are made. While they don't look particularly sturdy, they don't feel loose or anything. It will only be a matter of time before we see how they hold up. In the worst case, if the hinges fail, you can simply replace them; it wouldn't be difficult. As with any set that turns the board into a storage box, when closed the playing surface is outside. Depending on how you plan to store it, you may want to keep the box it came in. It fits exactly on the closed board (no additional packaging material) and protects the playing surface from dents or scratches. -- MAGNETS: The product in the description mentions "luminous magnetism". So true. The magnets are strong enough that I can tilt the board 45 degrees or a little more and hold the position. As this never happens in real life, this is ideal when I need to move the board or place it on my lap on my desk while working on chess books and not worry about the pieces moving around. The magnets aren't strong enough to get in the way when manipulating the pieces, but instead they're easy to pick up and make a nice light "pop" when placed on the court. - SIZE: I already have a small travel chess set and was a bit concerned that the set might be too small. This set is primarily intended for home use and I wanted it to be large enough for adults to play comfortably, yet small enough not to take up too much space on my coffee table and easy to store. I found this board enjoyable to play with and the pieces are a good size and easy to work with. Yes, you will hit neighboring pieces if you move too fast, but in any case no one on the market for this set will play rapid chess. A slightly larger set would have been nice, but that was a small concession. For casual gaming and analysis, this is fine. APPEARANCE: This has to be one of the prettiest plastic kits around. When I sit on my coffee table, it really looks like wood. The plastics and the painting of the parts look particularly good. They have a beautiful antique look. The white parts are not entirely white but have the creamy look of antique ivory. Black details look like old carved wood. To do this, they used a very intelligent and efficient molding process. Not many plastic kits can be described as "beautiful", but this one definitely is. Also, the inclusion of algebraic coordinates for use with chess books was important. The markings are small but clear. I like that they are thinner than the larger markers. If I keep playing seriously enough, I'll eventually happily buy a nice, larger set of woods. But now I'm quite happy with this set and will keep it to myself because of the portability. I'm very glad I bought this over other sets I've looked at.
