Worked well on a Windows PC

My original goal for this WiFi adapter was to use it on a Raspberry Pi 2 with the MotionEye OS installed. This Raspberry Pi is currently being used as a camera to monitor the progress of my 3D printer. I used an EDIMAX dongle to connect to WiFi, which works fine most of the time. The problem is that the Wi-Fi signal can be a bit weak where the printer is located, causing the connection to drop. I was hoping that this long antenna WiFi dongle would solve this problem. It uses a Realtek chipset that claims to be compatible with the Pi. But unlike EDIMAX, this key was not automatically recognized by the Pi during installation. I tried installing manually but couldn't get it to work. After struggling with Linux commands for over an hour, I gave up. Maybe someone with better Linux skills will have better luck than me, they also tried this adapter with Windows 7 and Windows 10 Pro. The installation with the installer from the supplied CD went smoothly. WiFi signal strength was decent on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz and on par with my MacBook Pro. The instructions state that this adapter cannot be used with USB2 due to USB2's current limitation (i.e. 500mA max). This may be the cause of my problem with Raspberry Pi 2, but my 2 PCs only have USB2 and the dongle works fine on both.

Pros
  • USB network adapter
Cons
  • Almost never
