Mesh is way better than a ball. When you're blending very thick drinks, the grate will block large chunks and prevent them from leaving the bottle. That way you can add more water and shake a little to get it all out of the bottle. It doesn't sound too nasty either since nothing bounces around in the bottle. There aren't many mesh options on the market. I had a Body Fortress shaker I got about 8 years ago and it was starting to fall apart so the search began. I tried a regular $3 Walmart shaker, but it leaks pretty badly (even when just shaken). This SIS shaker is by far the best. Plus points for Made in Germany.
