I just took out the old modem and put in the new one. There are no problems with the router. No problem getting help from Verizon. I had to manually reconfigure the new modem's SSID and passwords. It helps to have a manual that you can download. To get the best speed, I had to connect the ONT box to the new router with an Ethernet cable instead of a coaxial cable. The old man should do that too. I save dollars and get exactly the same performance. However, note that Verizon will not replace this modem if I have a problem. I will risk it.
