I was looking for a home use filtration system to replace 5 gallon jugs with a reverse osmosis water dispenser at our local supermarket. Groundwater in my area has shown unhealthy levels of arsenic and hexavalent chromium, both of which cannot be removed by activated carbon filtration (e.g. Brita or similar). Viable options for removing these harmful chemicals include reverse osmosis (which I used via a grocery store dispenser) and ion exchange (which is used in this filtration system. The most common complaints in other reviews were short filter life and high filter cost. I've tracked them as much water I run through the filter in mine and after filtering for each 5 gallon batch the water entering the filter tested for total dissolved solids from 79 to 83 ppm using the tester that came with that filter, which isn't really that bad, except most of them are one or both of the chemicals I mentioned.I use the Sawyer mini as a pre-filter as those filter cartridges are very expensive.I didn't want to waste an expensive filter to get rid of germs and fine sediment Water at the outlet was tested at 0 ppm TDS for the first 55 gallons, but after that it showed 1 ppm. Still at 1ppm after another 5 gallons. I'll update when I know how many gallons it takes to get to 6ppm if they suggest changing the filter. 6 would be unhealthy levels of arsenic or hexavalent chromium, but I don't think that's 100% of what's happening. At 55 gallons that would be 27 cents per gallon of very pure water at $15 per filter not including the cost of the dispenser which I think is $5 since I paid $20 the filter was included $15 the current cost per filter are when you buy two at a time. RO water from the grocery store here costs 38 cents a gallon, so it costs less than buying the reverse osmosis water they hand out at the store. I didn't like the faucet on their dispenser box. They used a spring-loaded button valve so you can't just open it to fill the bottle, you have to apply constant pressure to get the water flowing. Also, their large fridge dispenser box is too small for my needs. I like to keep 2+ gallons of cold drinking water in the fridge and they don't even come close. Partly due to this poor design, I just walk through to fill 5 gallon jugs. My family uses 4-5 gallons a day so I just couldn't get by with a dispenser that size. Update: Once the outlet water is non-zero, you need to change the filter a few gallons. I saw up to 14ppm before drinking another 5 gallon pitcher of filtered water.
