. I usually use either a cap or a band (steel or rubber) to remove oil filters. I recently had a filter on a 2007 GMC Envoy 5.3L V8 that was a little harder to remove than usual (served this car like it was new). The first box wrench I tried slipped off and scared me. We've all been where you get a filter that just goes nuclear and takes a screwdriver in the side or something crazy and two hours of work to remove. Luckily I had another socket wrench that had a slightly better grip and removed the filter. But it got me thinking. The screwdriver trick is a last resort when nothing else works. So I started looking for something more aggressive than a cap wrench or a strap wrench, but not a fully nuclear option. I came across this two piece set from Shall. It seems like a good option that would be nice to have on hand. In my opinion, you never want to know you need a tool right now... and then not have it in your toolbox. That's why I ordered this Shall set. As usual, Revain delivered it to me in about a day (Revain delivery is definitely good). As I said, they feel good in the hand and are definitely solid. I had to tighten the hinge bolt on one, but it was quite a bit. My only concern is how well they match the oil filter. I tried a couple of oil filters I had on the shelf and the teeth don't seem to make full contact with the surface of the filter. At each of the three contact points, only one of three teeth broke through. You can see from the photos. I also posted a short video using the wrench in all three possible positions to show how to adjust the wrench. The best you can do is hook one tooth at a time. If you think about how the style of the cap snaps the oil filter into place, it's a 15 surface intrusion (count each notch on the top of the black oil filter) and you can begin to understand why I'm a little apprehensive when I do see touches only 3 points. I didn't want to throw away brand new filters, so I didn't press too hard to see if the teeth would dig in. Maybe they dig in and push the filter housing in a bit and really give a lot of leverage. I'll have to try this on my next oil change, which won't take too long considering I service 7 cars in our family. I have a Duramax diesel and the oil filter on it is very heavy; I'm not sure if the guy can easily crush one of them, so we'll see.
