This is my first experience with spear-shaped swabs, and I'm a convert, though I would not call them general purpose. From the stiff (but not rigid) stem to the fabric encapsulated tip, these swabs excel at cleaning in small, difficult-to-reach places. I use them mostly for electronic/PCB cleaning. The thermal bonding of fabric to stem does interfere a bit when trying to use the side of the swab to scrub and contrary to the recommendation in the Product Description, I wouldn't want that bonding anywhere near the coating on an expensive camera lens. Also, the tip won't carry as much solvent as a cotton swab. But frankly, those tradeoffs are well worth not leaving wisps of dirty cotton fibers on the thing you just "cleaned".
