Vinyl outer sleeve. Under the liner is a pair of spring clips that hold the case closed. It's strong enough to protect my sunglasses without being too heavy. The downside is the limited lifespan of the spring clips. Opening and closing the case slowly fatigues the springs and eventually breaks them. The case still works as a folding box; it just doesn't close tight. Good on a bedstead, not so good for bouncing around in a coat pocket or briefcase. If you only open the case once or twice a day, you'll likely last a few years before the springs snap. I switch between sunglasses and regular glasses several times a day. I got about a year and a half from an identical case that this purchase replaced. So: does what it's supposed to, would be nice if it lasted longer, but good for the price.
