Vinyl outer sleeve. Under the liner is a pair of spring clips that hold the case closed. It's strong enough to protect my sunglasses without being too heavy. This is a BEAUTIFUL case and really well made. sharp and so strong my glasses absorbed the smell. I took out my glasses and left the lid of the suitcase open to air it out, hoping the smell would go away. It's not like this. My room smelled bad because of this incident. I don't want to wear glasses that have absorbed this smell because the glasses are so close to my eyes and I'm afraid of mold spores. Great bag. Protects my glasses which I need as I am blind in one eye without them. Accidentally threw the suitcase off the table. He flew across the room. My first prescription glasses were expensive. So I assumed they would come with a nice hard case to protect them. nope I pounded on the asphalt without success. I don't know why it's so hard to find a suitcase this size, but it's there. I also didn't think my glasses were that big until I tried to fit them into other cases.
