Smooth leather, a little softer than I had hoped but very handy for daily pocket knife cleaning. The skin can be gently rubbed with a stiff brush to ensure the mass adheres better before application. It also helps if it's warm, for example, before loading, put the sling and mass under a table lamp or in the warm sun for 15 minutes. The mixture will flake off a bit if not warm. I haven't experimented with any type of mineral oil or water yet to see if a moisturizer would help, but it leaves a nice sharp, mirror-like edge on knives that peel from Spyderco's thin ceramic.
