Review on ๐Ÿ’พ Efficient Data Storage Controller: LSI Logic SAS 9207-8i Storage Controller LSI00301 by Joseph Brendemuehl

Works with unRAID for internal components

The box I received shows an LSI Logic SAS 9207-8e (note the "e" at the end instead of the "i"), though says the sticker on the Box 8i. This bothered me until I opened the box and realized it was the right card (internal SAS ports vs. external). My guess is that the manufacturer just doesn't bother printing separate boxes for each variant of their cards, and uses stickers to differentiate between the actual models. I bought one of these for my unRAID server (running version 6.1.8) to connect more. Hard drives since my motherboard only has 6 SATA ports. I put it in an x16 slot, which is a bit odd for an x8 card, but seems secure enough with just one screw on the back. Works well, no configuration required, and there's basically nothing to *configure* in the card's BIOS. I think it makes sense to only use it as a SAS/SATA card (not a RAID). One of the plug-in SAS ports doesn't block the cable, and the cable came loose after installation, preventing half of my drives from showing up on first boot. I was just putting a lot of effort into routing data and power for 12 SATA devices so I didn't want to pull out the card and cable to see what was wrong so I didn't do a star splice as that would be a 3rd party issue could be party cables that I bought. It works great with a cable plugged into the port, it just doesn't snap into place like it should. No problem if you never move the machine or mess around with cables inside.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
