If you want them to provide proper chemical filtration you need to use a better media than just a small amount of activated carbon - I use a combination of Diamond Blend, Phospure, Seachem SeaGel for full chemical filtration. If you choose to use only charcoal you will have extremely limited chemical filtration for less than 30 days. If you use a better quality media (like the ones above) you can achieve full chemical filtration within 3-4 months. at once. The filter cartridge material is very durable and provides excellent particle filtration and becomes an excellent mechanical/biological filter over time as bacteria become established on it. It can be used without media as a simple mechanical/biological filter medium. Nonetheless. Due to the density of the material, it is imperative that it be used in combination with a pre-filter sponge or Blue Bonded material to ensure it does not clog so badly that it impedes the flow of water in the filter. But the material is holding up exceptionally well --- one in the filter hasn't been changed in 12 months. and remained intact.
