Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Highly Reliable Asus 8X External Slim DVD+/-RW Drive SDRW-08D2S-U - Retail (Black) - Top Performance and Convenience by Isaiah Boys

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The winter of our disc content

Nice little disc. 2 key points I should make first: 1) You probably CAN only run it from one USB port, although the instructions recommend using two . On my XP DELL PC it works fine with one USB port, at least for reading - haven't tried burning yet, which may use more power and require a second USB port. 2) The ONLY hit is the USB cable being too short. as others have commented. It's just over a foot long - 4 to 6 feet would be preferred to allow for more flexibility in placement. ADVANTAGES: 1) beautiful appearance, beautiful glossy black surface. 2) Small footprint - only about half an inch thick, little more than a few DVDs stacked on top of each other. 3) Easy to install - all I had to do was plug in a USB cable - no software, nothing. There wasn't even a "New device found" dialog. NICE! 4) Price - I paid less than $30 after discount, delivered. CONS: 1) Disc tray does not boot but is locked. So it needs to be plugged in to open, but all it does is unlock when you press the eject button, you have to open and close it manually. A small minus to pay in the face of all the PLUSES. 2) As already mentioned, the USB cable is too short. 3) I'd rather we had a choice of external drive colors (deep red OR pastel pink would be fine, others might prefer gold, silver, blue - let's CHOOSE - why is Apple the only company getting it?) 4) The drive runs slightly slower on the USB bus than a comparable integrated drive due to USB bus speed limitations. This isn't a hit for this particular model, but will be a problem with any USB 2.0 drive. Overall, it's a small price to pay unless you're looking to burn high volume. If so, you don't want to go that route. Overall this drive does a great job and therefore deserves a 5 star rating.
