After plastic straws were banned in our city, we thought we should give it a thought. We don't often use straws at home, usually use cups or bottles with included or built in plastic or metal reusable straws, and we have some metal reusable straws. But we keep a small box of straws in our closet for when a disposable straw makes sense. We've tried various "compostable" paper or vegetable straws, but they tend to dry out, crack, disintegrate, or otherwise fail to survive the drinking experience. Or they add a little something when they fall apart in your drink. Apparently not. They persist if left in drinks for a long time. They can withstand the pressure needed for a thick smoothie or shake. They compress but don't break when squeezed or bitten. They aren't as flexible as some plastic straws and they aren't brittle, but if you have a straw biter they straighten out pretty quickly and stay flat. I've used them as stir sticks and a craft project and they hold up there too. They were preserved in hot and cold drinks and covered with twine and glue. They are a bit more expensive compared to disposable plastic straws, around 7 cents instead of one cent. But if you don't use them often, want to be mindful of the environment, and are looking for a reliable replacement, they will. I assume this box of 200 will last a few years if we use disposable straws.
