We've replaced our entertainment center with a completely open one (so no hidden storage). Since good-looking containers cost about the same as vintage-style cases and chests, I went with the latter for a fun look (it actually suited our DVDs better too). Unfortunately, many of them have raw wood or metal on the bottom and I didn't want to scratch the wood on the new furniture. I used this felt tape on the bottom outside edges of all the boxes - problem solved. It was a quick, easy, and inexpensive solution that protects furniture without adding to its unsightly bulk. Looking at the shelves, you can't even see that there's anything under the boxes. It's thin enough that you can apply a stripe or two to smaller items if you're worried about scratching a certain surface (e.g. something with a stone base). It worked great and looks so amazing I didn't even try the sticky felt sheet I bought at the same time, I guess it can wait for a future project.
