I bought the Start Smart Fish Finder because I thought it would be just as easy to use from the boat as from the kayak. NO SO! It doesn't really work in 2 feet of water, it needs to be deeper, made for pouring on land, and if you have a 4G phone and can't turn that part off, it won't work. The app is great, it's a simple device, I just couldn't get it to work from the end of the dock in two feet or sixteen feet of water. After talking to customer service, I was informed and I returned it and ordered Smart Fish at twice the price. It makes me feel like an idiot, so be careful. Be sure what you need. I had reasons for simple and easy use, money was one of them, now for $200+ I'll let you know how 'the best' works. I even have a dedicated phone to use, a nice no contract LG Flex with great WiFi capabilities, so we'll see. Oh, and Start uses WIFI ONLY. Yes, I'm very frustrated at the moment with the ambiguity in the specs. If what I've been told is true or not, I'll let you know. 01/06/19OK, WE ARE GOING ON WITH DEEPER PRO+. Again, a dedicated phone or tablet is required to operate the device. This device uses both GPS and Wi-Fi, but you cannot use it with a phone or tablet if the data connection is enabled. ALSO, if you have another phone or device with data on or near the phone or tablet you're using with the PRO+, it generally won't maintain the connection or even boot. So you either keep it away or turn it off, which works better for me later. If you have a low-resolution screen on a shared device, you can see what's going on, but not very well. Compared to the new Motorola, my LG just didn't do the job. Now imagine an expensive phone, the sun in your eyes and a PRO+ floating on an oil rig in the water. Remember that the PRO+ must have a heavy strap and this phone must be in a very secure place or you risk losing a lot of money. WORK WELL? YES, just be aware of what you are getting yourself into. It requires the right phone or tablet to work with, it's only good for about 3 hours in the water but then again it does everything the explanation says. Also keep in mind that if you have a lifespan of more than two years without an extended warranty, you may just have a dead PRO+. Nobody explained how to replace the battery or what to do after that. Now that you have some facts, you can make the right decision based on your needs. This is a great company in terms of customer service as well. Hope this all helps.
