Review on LG 34GN850-B UltraGear 34-Inch IPS Ultrawide Screen Monitor with 144Hz Refresh Rate, Tilt and Height Adjustments by Kyle Diego

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Amazing quality. All my games look like next gen games. It's worth it.

So I just got my brand new LG 34GN850-B. I used to have an ultrawide screen on an older LG that only had a 2560x1080 resolution. This new one is much better. 1080p to 1440p resolution, much better colors, much better response times, HDR400, nice curved screen, just a great upgrade. I tried several games including Doom Eternal, Rage 2, Far Cry 5, Forza Horizon 4, Crackdown 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Dirt Rally. Doom Eternal is actually pretty amazing and HDR seems to be working. Sure, I know this set is only HDR400 (which some people find useless), but I've spent about 30 hours playing this game on my old monitor and can see a noticeable improvement. Far Cry 5 supports HDR, but the effect is much more subtle. I had to turn it on and off a few times, HDR is better but not as big of a difference as in Doom. Rage 2 doesn't support HDR, but it still looks way better (maybe because of the 10-bit color), it's just a more saturated image. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was also amazing with full RTX and HDR Shadow Ultra settings. I'm not sure how much HDR does, but overall this game felt like a new generation compared to my old kit. I think a lot of that was just a jump in resolution, but better color too. Both Crackdown and Forza support HDR but it's honestly hard to tell if they do anything, but both games looked really good anyway so I won't complain. Also, I'm using this with a 2080 Ti, so the performance was really good, 90-120fps in all games. That aside, the response time is very good (maybe not the advertised 1ms, but still nice). Even at a lower frame rate, the monitor felt smooth and responsive, much better than my old TV (which has a double-image issue when panning or very fast panning). It's not quite TN level yet, but for IPS it could be one of the best. Overclocking to 160Hz wasn't a problem, but you can't run RGB 10-bit and 160Hz at the same time. Since 144Hz is still a lot, I disabled overclocking to use 10-bit color. While both options are hard to tell, I'd prefer better colors since most games are capped at 120 fps anyway. There were no quality control issues, there were no dead pixels, there was no glare at all. So overall I'm very happy with the monitor. It includes many of the quality of life improvements associated with the 1080p set, and strikes a good balance of features and quality. I've looked at more expensive HDR1000 kits and I'm sure HDR is better, but I think I made a good choice here. IPS panel is great, very little ghosting or similar issues, good clean picture. And HDR400 really does something. It's not stunning, but it's significantly better in some games and a useful bonus feature if you're already buying this monitor for other reasons. I would recommend.
