I have been sharpening my tools by hand for over 30 years. I use hand tools almost exclusively, and eighty percent of my tools are Japanese. I use some western planes, Record, Stanley, etc. for rough and prep work because my Japanese planes and chisels are very expensive and I prefer a cheaper blade when it counts. I could buy a cheap holder to quickly sharpen my cheap blades that are difficult to sharpen by hand because of the narrow bevel. So I spent the extra money and got this item. Overall, it's heavy and well-made, but it has one major flaw. In order for thin blades (compared to Japanese blades) to be held in place and not move during sharpening, it must be tightened to make the thin blade bend and flex as it is sharpened. Also, you can see that the pad is not flat (see photos). I wrote to the global seller and they were very responsive and polite, but the manufacturer confirmed it was a design. That might be fine for heavy Japanese blades, but it doesn't work for standard Western blades.
