Broke within a week

I got this item so I could punch holes in cotton and tape which I had no problem with. However yesterday I tried to punch a hole in thicker cardboard and somehow the whole tool was inoperable. Even if the handles are pushed all the way, the punch will not reach the hole. I'm hoping the Swingline offers a replacement because it looks like a decent tool and I'm not sure what went wrong.
